For the first time, the Teatro Real will be putting on the complete opera, including all ten scenes and the Polish act, thus allowing the full genius of Mussorgsky to be appreciated as one of the most outstanding composers of the 19th century, one whose imprint can be traced through Janáček, Debussy and Alban Berg to Messiaen. Boris Godunov speaks to us of the loneliness of the powerful visionary, the fascination of the people with false prophets and the infernal machinery of the struggle for power. Boris Godunov is also Danton, Jovellanos or Gorbachev.
